AC United FC 2 : 2 Team Spirit FC
Reported by: Quek Wei-Left-Leg-Standing-Liang

Some Sundays, a poor result can set the tone for a dreadful week at school or work. Some Sundays, a magnificent performance can inject a spring in your step and an air of invincibility about you. Other Sundays, like today, you end up somewhere in between where the result doesn't quite reflect what should have been and yet, could well turn out to be a defining moment in our team's season.

Today's fixture pitted AC United against a wounded and dangerous Team Spirit lying ominously in the relegation zone. Having only narrowly beaten them last time out, AC were in no mood to take things lightly especially with Suave Fusion and a resurgent One Touchables breathing down our necks.

Before both teams took the field, rumours abound that two scouts from Etoile FC were present, alerted to the prospect of a cracking game and eager to unearth the next Flavien Michelini.

As it turned out, the scouts were seen sneaking out at halftime for lattes after a cautious, goalless first half.

In fact, the only meaningful piece of action came when Dianto waved frantically to the bench asking to be subbed, no doubt due to his intestinal tantrum also known as loose bowels.

If the first half was uneventful, the second served up enough action for an entire Football Feast Review show!

TS drew first blood when Boonk, pressed into emergency service as leftback, was dispossessed on the halfway line. The speedy TS striker, no doubt thinking the Etoile scouts were still watching, tore down the flank and despite close attention from the covering Wilfred, somehow squeezed the ball past Jason to put them 1-0 up.

Things were about to get worse. As TS played the ball patiently around the AC penalty area, there seemed to be no danger until a speculative shot from an opposing midfielder caught a mysterious gust of wind, veered off course and eluded Jason to put AC two goals down.

TS were flying now but the team in blue were made of sterner stuff.

Roy went close on two occasions; the first when a brilliantly placed shot from outside the box had the keeper beaten all ends up but clipped the righthand post. The second was when a clever reverse pass from Weijian saw Roy spring the offside trap but his shot rebounded agonizingly off the upright.

The irrepressible Boonk then won the ball in midfield for the umpteeth time and advanced down the left. A quick flick through the centre saw Jamal and a TS defender racing to reach the ball.

Showing quick feet and presence of mind, Jamal managed to not only reach the ball first, but flick it over the advancing keeper into goal to give AC a glimmer of hope!

By now, Team Spirit were rocking. With Wilfred, Weijian and Rodney running around like men possessed, it seemed inevitable that the equalizer would come.

And when it did, what a cracker it proved to be.

Weijian won a 50-50 challenge and held off a challenge before hitting a deep cross into the box. The pass seemed to be overhit but Weisong had other ideas. Finding space between two defenders, he launched himself into the air and sent a looping header over the keeper's despairing dive for a priceless equalizer!

It was a goal Rooney would have been proud of!

Both teams then had chances to win the game as they poured forward in droves.

Jason kept AC in the game with a flying fingertip save from another long shot before another brilliant pass from Jamal sent Wong Ci scampering free down the right. He then sent in a teasing cross but Roy just failed to make a clean connection.

That proved to be the last bit of action as Team Spirit trudged off the pitch, unable to believe how they let the game slip.

Credit to AC however, for not allowing their heads to drop.

It was a game where Poon ended up as rightback, Boonk won praise from Jason for his MOM performance as leftback.

Ganesh, Weijian and Dianto soldiered on despite a variety of ailments and the rest of the AC team simply refused to accept when they were beaten.

Suddenly, Monday doesn't seem so blue.
