Social appoints Ken Choong as vice- captain
Reported by: Andrew Chng

Ken managed to earn respect of entire team through his dedication on and off the pitch

Ever since Ken first played for Vipers Social 10 months ago, he has done what no other midfielder has been able to accomplish for Social, and that is to add steel to the centre of the midfield.

The qualities he brought to Social were evident since the first trial he had with them, where he bossed the midfield and gelled with the rest of the team as if he had played with them regularly. Be it cutting out the opponent’s quick break or providing cover for his team mates, Ken makes up for his relative slower pace with his exceptional reading of the game and his pure determination said, defensive duties aren’t the only responsibility Ken has in Social. With the evolution of the pivotal defensive midfielder, they are now expected to be the launch pads of teams’ attack as demonstrated by Makelele. Hence, it is not surprising to see Ken launching a quick long ball to release  overlapping wingers, or trying to tread a pass to the strikers.

Blessed with stamina, Ken is known to cover every blade on the field with his endless running to try to receive the ball and support his teammates. Ken’s “never-say-die” attitude and commitment to Social earned him the nickname of “Midfield General”, and the latest news of him being unanimously appointed as Vice-Captain of Social, is just the reward for a player who has always given his best in Social colours.

Unknown to many, Ken was not keen on being the vice-captain for Social at the start. " I just want to enjoy my soccer. Being vice-captain gives me lots of pressure and stress. “quoted Ken when being when being told that he was a possible candidate for vice-captain by the gaffer a month ago. The gaffer persists on with his choice and gave Ken the armband on games when Fairuz was absent or substituted during games.

Social's captain has only good words to say about Ken. “He is without a doubt the best deputy to me. On the field, he is a good leader that commands the midfield well. Not only that, when I am not voicing out on the field during a match, ken will help to communicate with the players. He will give instructions to the attack and defense."

His sentiments were shared by centre-back, Robert Lee. "Excellent choice, given his undoubted work rate and commitment to the team. Ken plays whole heartedly and gives his all every time."

On the other hand, co-manager, Chua Wei Chuen feels that there is still room for improvement for Ken as the vice-captain. “Ken leads by example in terms of fitness and determination. However, he needs to be more vocal in terms coordinating game play from his defensive midfield role."After a discussion with the gaffer, both managers managed to find a balance of Ken's initial reluctance of being vice-captain and his qualities on the field.
In an official statement released by the club. “Ken Choong has been appointed as Social vice-captain for the upcoming Questra Cup and 1st season of the competitive league they are joining."
