After 18 grueling rounds of football action since early April, the 2011 NFL season came to a successful end as more than 600 amateur players were registered to feature for a total of 30 teams across 3 Divisons. Although the game of football has always been a team game where 11 players are each entrusted a particular role in the pitch, certain individuals have became an invaluable asset to their teams due to their regular contributions off and on the pitch.
Footballopod singled out three ‘starlets’ from each Division as we felt these lads have impressed us with their consistency. Their ability on the ball has also motivated several amateur players of today to improve themselves and excel in the competitive amateur scene.
NFL Division 1
First, we are in awe of Blessing Ughojo from SRC(Singapore Recreation Club) as the African striker showed his desire to score goals by converting more than five of them to lead his side to the Division 1 title. Thanks to his vast experience, Blessing Ughojo has become a ‘houshold’ name in the competitive amateur scene as his immense presence in the attacking third motivated his teammates to work their ways towards the gold this season.
Second, despite missing most of the action in the second half of the season due to a niggling injury, former Home United hitman Fadzuhasny Juraimi single handedly kept SCC NFL in the running for the title by converting a total nine goals, making him one of the most lethal finishers in amateur football today.
Third, although this battling midfielder has found the back of the net just thrice for Ang Mo Kio United FC, dimunitive midfielder Lionel Kong has established himself as an indispensable member in the centre of the park. Not only Lionel Kong possesses tenacity which Lions’s Hariss Harun can be proud, this hardworking lad is also a throw in ‘specialist’ for his side.
NFL Division 2
First, Tiong Bahru FC captured an excellent signing in the likes of Robert Eziakor as the African striker who represented SRC previously was firing on all cylinders with more than 15 goals to his name.
Second, Tessensohn Khalsa Rovers has Mathew Siva to thank for securing promotion to Division 1 as the offensive player became the top scorer for his side with 15 goals.
Third, the courageous and tactically astute Fairos Shah earned himself a regular spot in the starting eleven of Pioneer CSC as he demonstrated his sharpness in front of goals with nine goals.
NFL Division 3
First, the consistent Mohd Hakim who made his mark in the inaugural season of the League of Champions continued his prolific form in attack as he scored 20 goals for championship side Sporting Westlake this season.
Second, former Singapore international Azhar Baksin was influential in his ‘playmaker’ role for Admiralty FC as he was responsible for creating several goalscoring opportunities for his teammates.
Third, making his debut in the NFL this season, Nigel Lin was a creative spark for D2D FC as the left winger was a constant thorn for opposition defenders with his jinxing runs and change of pace.
