Victory Arena – Questra Vipers chairman John Yeong has spoken out ahead of this Saturday's EFL cup group H encounter with British Club First XI at Bukit Timah, insisting that the Cactusians hold the utmost respect for the British and what they have achieved in the EFL since the league's inception in 2006.
"The British Club are one of the pioneers in the EFL and what they have achieved to date has to be respected. They hold a proud tradition of winning silverware in this competition and they are not the winners of the Cup in 2007 and 2008 without a reason."
When asked what is the factor separating the two clubs at the moment, Yeong singled out one word - "tradition".
"It is something which we are lacking at the moment, and something which they have. Ours is still a very young club if you look at it and we have a long way to go to emulate sides who have a history of winning silverware."
The Vipers chief does foresee that the club's first real trophy isn't far around the corner though, and feels that his charges have the right ingredients to launch a sustained challenge on all fronts this season.
"We are driven by hunger. Each and everyone of the players are. You can see it in their eyes before each match, they really want to win this."
"Many of our players have won league titles and cups with other teams before, but we are now all part of the Vipers family and we want to start a tradition of winning silverware and challenging in every competition we enter here."
Having defeated OCBC 3-1 at Chua Chu Kang secondary in Questra's EFL Cup opener, the Cactusians only need a point from this match to progress to the next round. But yet again, Yeong insisted that the Vipers will be gunning for a win.
"It is not in this side's nature to go out aiming for a draw. We always want to win. Besides, if you aim for a draw you could very well end up losing."
