Ikhsan Fandi handed Fandi Ahmad Academy a 1-0 win in their second match of the Singa Cup 2011 tournament against Football Regional West U13, bringing the team to second in the table behind Football Regional West U14 because of goal difference.
FAA should have won more convincingly with them dominating possession and creating majority of chances in the first half. Goal-scoring opportunities started as early as five minutes into the game as Aarulselven took a shot, outside the box, which rattled the bar to the relief of the Australians.
Ikhsan’s first attempt at goal came ten minutes after, with a chance on the right but shot it straight to the keeper. It would have been a great ending to a dynamic first half for FAA as in the last minutes of the first half, when instead of squaring the ball to Aarul, Farhan took a shot which landed at the keeper.
The FAA boys started the second half vibrantly but had much less chances as compared to the first half.
Nur Sa’id, who was one of the key players in the team, with his excellent technical abilities and off-the-ball intelligence throughout the game, took a brilliant shot just outside the box which was saved by the goalkeeper.
Following that, Aarul tried his luck at goal but his effort hit the right post and went out.
It looked like the Football Regional West U13 were in the lead when they scored from a well-taken free kick until it was ruled as offside.
With only two minutes left in the game, Ikhsan scored the winning goal as he took a rather weak shot from the left, with his left foot. Credit to the accuracy of the shot, it was all cheers in the FAA stands as the ball slipped past the keeper and into the far post.
The FAA boys set to have sealed the game but in the final seconds as Syawal Said rushed forward to drop-kick up field and in haste stepped over his 18 yard line in the act of applying boot to ball, the referee signaled for a free-kick for the Football Regional West U13 just outside the box – in a dangerous position.
But Syawal went on to redeem himself with a fantastic save.
