Runners World, the official distributor of sports brand ASICS has signed Balestier captain Paul Cunningham as an ambassador for the brand. The Balestier centre back from New Zealand who is well known for his aerial prowess and defending abilities recently confirmed the three year deal with Football OPOD.
Better known for its light weight running shoes, Japanese brand ASICS has expanded its range in Singapore to include football boots with footballers like SAFFC winger Aliff Shafaein and Tampines winger Jamil Ali spotted wearing them during games.
Speaking to Football OPOD via an email interview, Marketing Manager of Runners World Mr. Henry Ong revealed that they have been sponsoring footballers in the S-League for a few years and felt that they were excellent ambassadors of the brand hence the company’s decision to approach the Tiger’s skipper.
“We have been sponsoring a handful of players in Balestier Khalsa and Home United for a few years now. They have proven to be great brand ambassadors of ASICS football boots and hence we chose to continue our sponsorship with them. We believe our products speak for themselves and through the great players using them they are able to recommend the boots to their peers and friends, word of mouth recommendation is more important than anything. We hope to sign on more players in the league as we expand our line of football boots and accessories, do watch out for what ASICS has to offer in football.”
In another interview with Football OPOD, Paul Cunningham shared that he was extremely thrilled when he was first approached by the ASICS Team
“When ASICS approached me about a sponsorship deal I was absolutely thrilled that they thought of me “Paul Cunningham" as the player they wanted to represent their apparel as well as the brand itself. As you know ASICS is heads and shoulders above the competition when it comes to Running shoes but I had never worn ASICS Football (Soccer) Boots before I signed the endorsement deal. I can tell you that they are in fact top of the line, lightweight and really comfortable. “
He also felt that more companies should take the initiative like ASICS: “They have really looked after me and made sure whatever I need or want is provided without hesitation including all kinds of training and travel equipment, on the field gear as well as day to day apparel which makes my life as a professional sports person a lot easier. Singapore football needs more brands like ASICS to step up and help footballers achieve their dreams” added the Balestier skipper.
